In this Unit, the focus will be the globalization and sustainability of earth.

Globalization: case study of Dubai

Dubai as one of the most famous and well developed city in the world, the way they developed however is not in way of sustainable. Comparing to the average development in the area where Dubai is, the government of United Arab Emirate put too much resources on this city. Within the huge restoration of oil, the government are able to have enough economic support to build a city like that. However, as all known, oil as a resources that is not renewable, it will eventually run out one day. At that time, will the government of  United Arab Emirate still have the ability to keep afford a city like Dubai? In order to find out this question, it requires further investigation of  Dubai's development history. 

• As the picture showing above, in 1990s Dubai was still poorly developed within all the dessert covering around. However, in just thirteen years, it changes dramatically from a place that can't even call as a town to a huge modernized city. Obviously, in order to achieve change like Dubai, it requires gigantic amount of resources and economic support. 
  
• as the line graph reveals, in the past 3 decades, the total consumption of oil has been rising in a high speed since the society has been developed much more bigger. Even after 1980 there is a period that the consumption experienced a small decline, but it quickly recovers to the climbing rate. Furthermore, as the prediction portrays, the consumption in the future will grow even faster. In this case, the oil reserve of the world will also be consumed in a high speed. Therefore, if one day the oil reserve in United Arab Emirate runs out, it probably will bring Dubai a huge impact, since oil reserve is what the city and even the country relies on.
  
• Here is a example of Burj Khalifa which is one of the most famous tower in Dubai. Noticeably, the whole building project cost Dubai 51.1 billion dollar.  In fact, as being a city Dubai has already over developed, in this case, the government is still putting a huge portion of their budget on the city development in Dubai. It cause UAE's all cities except Dubai are heavily underdeveloped. With that huge income from oil, the government of  UAE should spend more on other city instead of wasting all these budget on a city that is over developed. Even worth,the electricity cost in Dubai is becoming a huge burden for the UAE government. In case to support the electricity in Dubai, even the capital city Abu Dhabi need to shut down their electricity in order to save more for Dubai.

the video above shows the another question of Dubai's development. As being a city located in the desert, all water consumption become a huge portion of government's budget. however, in Dubai, in order to attract more visitors and build a better reputation, the water use in Dubai can be called as a waste comparing to all other city in UAE. For example. the Dubai fountain as being the largest water fountain in the world it can spray 22,000 gallons (83,000 liters) water into the sky at anytime.   

Therefore, within all these development in Dubai, it doesn't consider about the problems of sustainability. within one day, when all oil reserve in UAE is gone, the government of  UAE won't be able to afford this city. In fact, due to Dubai, UAE government is already being putted a heavy burden on their shoulders. In order to develop in a sustainable pattern, Dubai may need to take off its "fancy out cover" and consider more about the future.

Globalization unit: How can globalization relate with sustainability

Nowadays, within the technology highly developed, the process of globalization is gradually becoming the dominant trend. Meanwhile, the groups that worried about sustainability for the present industries are also getting stronger. in this case, this blog will discuss about the how globalization and sustainability are able to affect each other and also what kinds of influences they will bring to each other.

In case to figure out the influences they have brought to each other, we need to understand how both of them work first. 

1. Globalization: it means the trend of a greater connection between countries all over the world. the relation can be multiple such as economic, politics and geographical. In this case, within more countries join Globalization, it will be able to improve the productivity of the world since they are combining several countries's resources to produce objects.
   

sustainability: it started with the concern from the time when the world began to expanded rapidly. From that point  people started worried about not only the Restoration of resources, but also the capacity of earth to accommodate the growing population.

• Connection: There are multiple connections exists between globalization and sustainability. 
• For example, since the process of globalization can bring the world a higher productivity, it will also increase the speed of consumption to the resources. In this case, the more globalization our world become, the more damage could be done to our planet. 

• Furthermore, the fact that globalization is able to lower the cost during the processing doesn't mean for all the countries that taking part in. In fact, the main beneficiary from the process are still those old core countries. Since they have a higher labor cost in their own land. By shifting the processing parts required labor resources to those near core and new core countries, it can significantly reduce the cost during the process. however, for those near core and new core countries, as being the part who taking care of producing, they are not only responsible for the labor resources cost, but also sometimes for those materials. Eventually, when the product has been sold out, the profit belong to them will only stand a small portion our of the whole profit since those countries who held the technologies in hand hare taking most of the profit. Just like this political cartoon reveals, after consuming all the resources from near core and new core countries, there are also environmental destruction and pollution left to those countries. However within the low income to those countries, they don't have enough economic support to dealing with those pollution in this case, the condition is getting worse as the globalization processing   

• After watching this video, we are able to further understand how globalization can impact the sustainability. In the video, without enough in come to support the factories the pollution coming with the process are being ignored since they don't have enough ability to dealing with that problems. For these countries, globalization is like a negative cycle, the fewer they are paid, the less sustainable they are. 

As a conclusion, after the researching between the relationship, I found depending on the situation of the country, the impact globalization bring can be different. For those old core countries like US, globalization will only make them stronger, there will be less pollution being released in their territories since the producing process is putted in other countries. meanwhile, the high productivity make them able to have better support when they are facing the problem of sustainability. However, for those near core and new core countries, globalization is like a double-edged-sword. On the one hand they are able to get more opportunity in case for better development. But within their developments, the pollution coming with will be stacked more and more. Therefore, there is a risk of sustainability in future.
